The night before executives from America Online Inc. and Time Warner Inc. met for dinner Jan. 6, sparking the largest corporate merger ever, two of AOL’s top in-house lawyers made a friendly wager.

AOL vice president and general counsel Paul Cappuccio bet the company’s chief M&A lawyer, Michael McGowan, a drink that the deal would not go down that weekend.
