By the end of 2001, first-year salaries will be a standard $200,000, thanks in large part to the invention of a pill that will allow associates to work for three weeks at a time without a break — just enough to reach the minimum 4,000 billable hours. In the San Francisco Bay Area, which will then be referred to as Yahooland, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati will be the first firm to take itself public, reducing its $300,000 starting salary to $85,000 plus stock options. Thelen Reid & Priest will be named the official law firm of the United States by President George W. Bush as a show of appreciation for the millions of dollars the firm raised for his 2000 campaign. Vice President Stephan Minikes will not object. To help attract younger talent, marketers at Pillsbury Madison & Sutro will design a new punk-rock image for the firm. Casual Friday will be replaced by make-fun-of-the-old-guy Friday. Indeed, change will happen fast, but for the most part, all attempts to adapt to the new world will be futile until 2005. That is when, following the merger of the United States, Europe and Japan, all law firms and accounting firms will be consolidated into one giant entity called BigFirm.
