Illinois Governor George H. Ryan on Thursday appointed a group of high-profile Illinois attorneys and politicians to lead a probe of the state’s capital punishment system.

Chairing the governor’s 14-member Commission on Capital Punishment will be former Chief U.S. District Judge Frank McGarr, with former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon and former U.S. Attorney Thomas Sullivan serving as co-chairs.
