Ending years of political wrangling, both U.S. District Judge Richard Paez and San Francisco attorney Marsha Berzon were confirmed Thursday by the U.S. Senate to the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

The surprisingly resounding confirmations — a 59-39 vote for Paez and 64-34 for Berzon — capped a partisan and sometimes rancorous hearing Thursday that brought to a close two nominations that have cast a spotlight on a judicial nominations process some say is becoming dysfunctional.
