Jeremy Gaston looks pretty good on paper. He graduated in 1999 from the University of Texas School of Law with a 4.0 average and his résumé includes a stint as law review notes editor, an Order of the Coif membership and a prestigious scholarship. But it might have been his affinity for airborne objects that distinguished him from the other overachievers vying for a coveted U.S. Supreme Court clerkship when the mid-February acceptance letters went out. Gaston, who is clerking for 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Patrick Higginbotham in Dallas, says he applied for a high court spot and was invited to interview with Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and her four clerks. “They asked mainly about my background, where I grew up and about my interests,” he says. But the Supreme Team was obviously impressed when he told them he had been juggling for 15 years. “I did a performance for her clerks and her staff after the interview,” he says. Gaston begins his clerkship with O’Connor in August 2001. First he will spend a year with the Houston office of his future employer, Susman Godfrey. “He’s a great guy, and probably the second or third best juggler at the firm,” says partner Neal Manne.
