White & Case’s decision to boost starting pay for first-year associates a whopping 35 percent has plunged South Florida’s firms into an unprecedented tumult.

Already, two other firms have responded with their own pay-raising plans. Richmond, Va.-based Hunton & Williams, which has a 15-lawyer Miami office, announced it is matching White & Case’s pay at all its offices. Florida’s largest firm, Holland & Knight, also will make increases, but exact amounts have not yet been decided.
