In Orleans, Mass., District Court, access to the building is gained through any of five unlocked doors. "Aside from the presence of three court officers (in the courtrooms), we have no security at all," said Stephen I. Ross, clerk-magistrate. The court is not alone in its lack of security measures. Thirty of Massachusetts' 110 courthouses have little or virtually no building security systems. To remedy that, the courts have requested $7 million for security equipment and new security personnel.
