In a move some observers warn could be a "political hand grenade" lobbed at trademark owners, the European Commission floated a proposal to create a top level domain name ("TLD") for the European Union. The new country code TLD, if approved, would be .EU. The EC said the creation of .EU would "strengthen the infrastructure of the Internet in Europe, for the purposes of the European Institutions, private users and for commercial purposes including electronic commerce."
