Working as in-house counsel for his family’s mobile home business for the last 20 years hasn’t earned Vernon, Conn., lawyer John L. Giulietti points with his three siblings. Just their animosity. It’s also brought harsh criticism from Judge Julia L. Aurigemma, who has the grueling task of presiding over a convoluted legal battle pitting the attorney against his family. Ruling in Giulietti v. Giulietti, Aurigemma found that Giulietti abused his position as his family’s lawyer in an attempt to wrestle away ownership shares that his recently deceased father wished to be divided equally between his four children. She removed the attorney as a director of the corporation that operates the park and in an unusual move ordered the property to be sold at a private auction limited to the four Giulietti offspring. “Most lawyers provide valuable advice and services to members of their families. Unfortunately, attorney John L. Giulietti is not like most attorneys,” Aurigemma wrote. The ruling uses adjectives like “unconscionable” and “pathological” in describing Giulietti’s alleged behavior. Last month, John L. Giulietti appealed the four cases that Aurigemma’s ruling addresses, stating that they would be strongly contested.
