Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher is the big winner in the lottery to land internationally renowned Department of Justice antitrust guru Gary Spratling. The San Francisco native built a peerless reputation in nearly three decades with Main Justice, helping its antitrust division rake in more than $1 billion in penalties last year and revolutionizing the way the feds handle antitrust cases. Along the way, he nailed some of the biggest names on Wall Street. Spratling will take over as co-chair of Gibson, Dunn’s antitrust practice on Feb. 14, working out of its San Francisco office. The man who helped secure the largest corporate fine in U.S. history — $500 million against Hoffman-LaRoche — will form a quartet of antitrust chairs within Gibson, Dunn, joining Michael Denger in Washington, D.C., and Robert Cooper and Daniel Swanson in Los Angeles. “I cannot imagine any law firm whose antitrust practice is not going to be dwarfed by Gary’s presence,” said Jesse Markham, head of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe’s antitrust practice. “We would have loved to have had him.”
