Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge Ronald B. Merriweather won a long-fought battle against the Philadelphia Daily News Friday when a jury slapped the newspaper with $500,000 libel verdict for a story that wrongly implied that he had “fixed” a case, the judge’s lawyer reported.

But a lawyer for the newspaper vowed Friday to fight the verdict on appeal, saying the story never accused the judge of any wrongdoing, and the paper will litigate the case to the bitter end.
