Everyone has to live somewhere, and most people rent for at least some of their lives. So despite a bit of a bad name, landlords serve an important function. Now they have their own Web site. Two months ago, www.landlord.com launched as the place to go if you own or manage a dwelling. It’s a California venture that grew out of a company called Landlord Services Inc., and it’s run by people with years of experience in the field. Although the site carries the usual disclaimers about not engaging in the practice of law, it provides nuts-and-bolts information about what a landlord can and can’t do in various circumstances. Advice is given both generally and in response to members’ questions. (Membership is free; the site’s owners apparently hope to sell books and pamphlets and to bring advertising to the site.) The site is reasonably well designed, featuring an attractive scroll bar. Some of the tips sound a bit callous: If you are going to terminate a tenant without cause, make sure you collect his rent first. But that’s business.
