Carla T. Main interviewed George W. Kaufman, the author of “Balancing Life and Work: Taking the Stress Out of Success,” on Dec. 28, 1999, at the offices of the New York Law Journal. Following is their conversation on the special stresses and challenges faced by new partners.

Q: When you get the news that you made partner there is euphoria. Then, when you’ve had a chance to absorb it, there have to be other emotions, other feelings that come along with that. I suspect there is a little bit of fear, anxiety along with the joy. What are some of the common things that new partners would be feeling, and should they even explore those feelings if some of them are negative?
