To some criminal defense lawyers, the government’s pursuit of Miami lawyer Frank Quintero Jr. on money laundering charges is a prime example of the federal assault on lawyers who represent accused drug dealers. At the end of his second trial in five years, Quintero walked out of the Miami federal courthouse a free man after jurors acquitted him on six counts. Earlier, U.S. District Chief Judge Edward B. Davis acquitted Quintero on two money laundering and laundering conspiracy counts. The outcome marks the end of a five-year investigation that included four indictments, two trials, and an all-but-destroyed law practice for Quintero. He was among 14 people indicted, including another lawyer, Gerardo A. Remy Jr. The lawyers were accused of helping a Hialeah-based drug gang launder money, including opening secret bank accounts in Switzerland and Mexico for drug traffickers. Remy pleaded guilty to drug and money laundering charges in 1966 after prosecutors said they planned to indict his son. He remains in jail. Quintero said he’ll resume a criminal defense practice. “That is what I love to do,” he said.
