The District’s imminent lawsuit against the gun industry faces not only a difficult ride in the courts but also a potentially explosive political test.

D.C. officials are preparing a suit that would seek to force manufacturers and distributors to pay for health care costs stemming from gun violence. The move is expected to draw heated opposition from gun industry lobbyists with strong ties to Congress, as well as the city’s overseers on Capitol Hill who at any time could try to quash any suit the city may bring.
