God save Ralph Baxter. If the British press has anything to say about it, the Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe chairman may soon be one step closer to completing his plan totake over the world. The word from the Brits as of late is that Orrick has been in serioustalks with the chaps at London’s Bird & Bird, a 150-lawyer firm with an emphasis on intellectual property and information technology. Two British legal papers, The Lawyer and Legal Week, have written extensively on the talks and have even suggested a Dec. 31 merger date. If the reports are true Orrick would beat the Clifford Chance/Rogers & Wells transatlantic merger by one day. And Orrick would certainly one-up several other New York firms, which have been slow to move across the pond. The move would make sense for the iconoclastic Baxter, whose mantra is globalization, globalization, and more globalization.
