“I’m only down 5,000 or 6,000 miles for the year,” says John Epting, one of the metropolitan D.C. area’s top riders in his age group and a partner at Wilkes Artis Hedrick & Lane. When asked, “Down from what?” he responds nonchalantly, “I usually ride 8,000 to 9,000 miles a year.” Because he’s been so busy at work this year, Epting is “only” averaging about 100 miles per week. Between 1991, when he took up competitive cycling after years as a triathlete, and 1998, Epting was logging more like 200 to 300 miles a week. Tracey Foley, a project assistant who does investigative and litigation research at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Kerry Scanlon, a partner in the D.C. office of Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler, also log 200 to 250 miles a week during the racing season. While the season recently ended, Foley, Epting, Scanlon, and other competitive cyclists will continue to ride approximately 100 miles weekly until the spring. Lobel, Novins & Lamont partner Henry Banta likes competitive cycling because of its contrast to his workaday world. “You get to deal with real people,” he says. “In cycling, you can’t fake it.”
