Heide Mason, a veteran homicide prosecutor from Brooklyn, has been in the North Country of New York, near Lake Placid, for a couple months — not on an extended vacation, though. Mason has been working long days and through the weekends helping the Essex County District Attorney’s Office prosecute its first capital case. Her sojourn to the North County is also a first for the New York State District Attorney’s Association. Shortly after New York reinstated the death penalty in 1995, the association formed a mutual assistance program, under which prosecutors share resources in death penalty cases. Mason’s six and one-half month assignment to Essex County is believed to be the first time that one District Attorney’s Office has loaned an assistant to another office to handle courtroom duties, according to Sean Byrne, the head of the New York Prosecutors Training Institute, which has coordinated the program. Mason is assisting the Essex County DA in the prosecution of Jeffrey Glanda, a court stenographer who is accused of hiring an accomplice to help him kill his wife.
