It’s almost Election Day, and Virginia attorneys are playing their part. Although some candidates are running unopposed, every seat in Virginia’s 140-member General Assembly is up for grabs on Election Day. While the political money always flows freely in Virginia, which has no state contribution caps, campaign coffers have reached a new level in riches this year. At least 2,757 attorneys, law firms, and lobbyists have made campaign contributions to Virginia candidates during the current election cycle and in last year’s gubernatorial race, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. Law firm political action committees are a popular conduit for candidate funding. Law firms with big lobbying practices such as Richmond-based McGuire Woods Battle & Boothe, Hunton & Williams, Williams Mullen Clark & Dobbins, and Mays & Valentine and Northern Virginia’s Hazel & Thomas have contributed at least $1,078,679 through their firms and PACs in the last and current election cycles. Individually, Williams Mullen gave $145,935 by the end of August. The Hazel & Thomas PAC, which of the big firms has the most clout among Northern Virginia representatives, contributed $182,159. And Hunton & Williams donated $193,890 in the same time period. Mays & Valentine sent in contributions from its corporate budget totaling $233,585. But McGuire Woods tops out the crowd, contributing a whopping $323,108 for the current and 1997 election cycles.
