ABA Ethics Panel Considers Bid to 'Rat' on Clients

If a lawyer discovers that a client plans to commit fraud, is the lawyer forbidden to blow the whistle? Or is the lawyer allowed -- even obliged -- to blow the whistle? As basic as this question seems, the answer is often unclear, and rules vary from state to state. But a move by the American Bar Association to allow attorney whistle-blowing on clients is afoot and causing some controversy among lawyers weaned on the sanctity of lawyer-client privilege.
