The new arrangement between Kentucky-based Stites & Harbison and intellectual property firm Wheat, Smith & Beres is to mergers what going steady is to marriage. In law-firm speak, it's a "strategic alliance." The firms have known each other for 20 years, dating back to when they were opposing counsel in an intellectual property dispute involving the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls. The two have agreed to use each other as their first recommended referral source when appropriate.
