A Manhattan lawyer who only two months ago received the New York State Bar’s Outstanding Young Lawyer Award for his volunteer work just got socked with a $400,000 verdict against him for fraud and malpractice. In upholding the jury’s award against David Dorfman, Judge Denise Cote cited the lawyer’s resume, which lists him as a “litigator’s litigator” withextensive legal experience. Turns out Dorfman had opened his solo practice only one month before he handed the resume in 1994 to a client who later filed the malpractice case. The client claimed Dorfman mishandled his claim that a New York City lab had falsely diagnosed him as HIV-positive.
