Morris Engelberg, the Florida lawyer and longtime friend of Joe DiMaggio, has been sending out stern warnings that no one is going to be appropriating the Yankee Clipper’s name without his permission. Engelberg’s reminding everyone from New York Gov. George Pataki to the mayor of Hollywood, Fla., that he — and he alone — controls the licensing and use of DiMaggio’s name “in perpetuity as long as I am alive.” The lawyer has been responding to various plans to rename everything from highways to parks after the famed Yankee center fielder, who died last month. Meanwhile, Rosa Parks, catalyst for the civil rights movement, is about sick of R&B and rap artists using her name — specifically, the sometimes foul-mouthed men of Outkast. Their single “Rosa Parks” prompted the grand dame of the great cause to hire a lawyer to enjoin the rappers and LaFace Records from getting rich on her name. She shall overdub.
