Robert Shapiro apparently is one of the few O.J. Simpson “dream team” lawyers still spending more time in the legal trenches than on the airwaves. The partner at Century City, Califonia’s Christensen, Miller, Fink, Jacobs, Glaser, Weil and Shapiro spent much of the summer tending to legal matters for drug-plagued actor Robert Downey Jr., who a Malibu judge recently tossed back into jail — this time for three years — for violating probation stemming from his 1996 drug conviction. After Downey was escorted out of court in his Orange County-issue jumpsuit, Shapiro vowed to appeal the judge’s ruling and lamented to reporters that the actor had been “on the road to recovery.” Downey’s since been transferred from his prison cell to a rehab center, a move urged by family members and promoted on a Web site, freerobertdowneyjr.com.transfer. But Given Downey’s trackrecord, others might be excused for greeting Shapiro’s public pronouncements with a bit of skepticism.
