Men are becoming an increasingly scarce commodity at University of California law schools, according to recent enrollment statistics. At Boalt Hall School of Law, women account for 58.7 percent of this year’s entering class. “I believe we are regaining our longstanding reputation as a great place for women to go to law school,” said Boalt Hall dean Herma Hill Kay. Women also outnumber men in the incoming classes at the UCLA and UC-Davis law schools. However, since a 1995 resolution banning affirmative action admissions at UC campuses took effect two years ago, minority enrollment has been on the wane. “We’ve put a great deal of effort into outreach and recruiting,” Kay said. But the difficulty lies in persuading admitted minority students to enroll. Of the 29 African-Americans offered a spot in this year’s entering class, just seven will attend Boalt.
