Lyle Sinkewicz, publisher of The Saskatoon Star Phoenix in Saskatchewan, Canada, cited freedom of speech to defend his paper’s decision to carry an ad condemning homosexuality. The newspaper ran an ad in June, 1997 showing two men holding hands with the international symbol for “No Bozos,” a red circle with a slash though it. Along with the picture was a Biblical quotation: “A man who lies with male. Both of them have committed a detestable act [and] they shall surely be put to death.” Mr. Sinkewicz — answering questions from the Canadian Human Rights Commission — said his newspaper has also carried ads by gay groups, as well as personal ads for people looking for same-sex partners. This could start a trend in newspaper publishing: USA Today could run a centerfold of Anita Bryant one day and the winner of the Mr. San Francisco Bear 1999 contest the next.
