The Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, at the invitation of the U.S.State Department, met last week with a group of women lawyers from Uzbekistan togive advice on the formation of law firms and the practice of law generally. The legalprofession, as in the rest of the former Soviet Union, was barred until recently exceptas an arm of the state, said Meg Gifford, a Proskauer Rose partner involved in themeeting. Her group advised the women on issues such as the economics of privatepractice; women’s rights;discrimination in the legal profession and bar associations. Despite the country’sMuslim culture, more than half of all lawyers are women, she said.
