Latham & Watkins lawyers and staff are breaking a sweat in their efforts to keep alive one retired partner’s longstanding tradition of stair-climbing. The 79-year-old former partner, John Welch, returned to the stairwells late last month for the firm’s annual “John Welch Memorial Stairwell Ascent,” a race up 76 floors that the firm revived last month. Until his retirement in 1990, Welch sprinted up the stairs of all 76 floors of the Library Tower, the Los Angeles office building Latham calls home.
