Brooklyn courthouse employees have been questioned by the FBI and subpoenaed to appear before a federal grand jury in recent weeks as the Eastern District probe of Justice Gerald Held continues. Prosecutors are pursuing two lines of inquiry involving Justice Held: that for certain plaintiff firms, he steered cases to judges who would be aggressive in settling them, and that on occasion, after learning of a defense verdict, he would press the parties hard for a settlement prior to the verdict's disclosure.
