An insurance company attempted to do what Alabama law officials didn’t: try Mark O. Barton for the murder of his first wife, who had been killedwith her mother in 1993.

The company’s suit against Mark Barton amounted to a civil murder case — onesettled before trial. Two of the lawyers involved in that case came awaywith opposing views of Barton’s innocence.
