Los Angeles-based Manatt, Phelps & Phillips was bombarded last week by the media with questions about a summer clerkship John F. Kennedy Jr. completed at the firm in 1988. Kennedy, 38, who gave up a legal career earlier in the decade to run George magazine, had worked in Manatt’s main Century City office. Following the crash of Kennedy’s airplane on July 16, law firm management at Manatt at first agreed to answer questions from the press. By week’s end, however, firm management decided enough was enough and that discussing Kennedy’s long-ago clerkship did not benefit his memory or his family. Manatt will most likely write a letter of condolence to the Kennedy family or make a charitable contribution on his behalf.
