In a victory for lawyer-mothers, a Florida appellate court has reversed a ruling that took children away from a lawyer because she was devoting too much time to her career to be an effective mother. Seven of the appeal court’s 11 judges ruled last week that Miami’s Alice Hector should have custody of her two daughters. In fiery dissents, the three judges who last year granted custody to Hector’s ex-husband criticized their colleagues for falling victim to gender bias. The decision is “going to set a lot of people’s minds at ease that a working mother — as long as she’s a good mother — doesn’t have to worry about losing her kids,” says Hector’s lawyer, Burton Young of Young, Berman & Karpf in North Miami Beach. He is not related to Hector’s ex, Robert Young, whose lawyers vowed to appeal.
