The Texas Young Lawyers Association’s Aspiring Youth Program, which provides after-school mentors and role models for at-risk middle-school students, has garnered more kudos from the American Bar Association. The ABA’s Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities mentions the program in “Tools for Schools,” a new handbook that tells lawyers how they can get involved in public school education. “It really gets down to one lawyer or other volunteer with one student, who encourages that student to make the right choices,” says John Meredith, head of Aspiring Youth of Houston, a separate nonprofit organization that grew out of the program. The aspiring youth program, set up in 1992, has been established in 26 cities in Texas and has been copied by bar groups in 11 other states.
