Milk may do a body good, but it does a river bad. Safeway, the supermarket chain, has agreed to pay $200,000 as a penalty for dumping thousands of gallons of bad milk into bodies of water in Northern California via storm drains. The settlement ended a federal civil suit that charged the company with violating the Clean Water Act. Because environmental authorities claim that the dumped liquids turned small creeks a “milky white” and damaged the aquatic environment, the relatively small amount of money Safeway will pay may make it seem as though the government did not milk this one for all it was worth. Of course, the question many will be asking is this: Does the government have a valid claim, or are they just crying over spilt milk?
