New York’s Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett and Davis Polk & Wardwell are eyeing a bigger chunk of Northern California’s Gold Rush. Both firms are planning to open Silicon Valley offices in coming months, with Simpson moving in as early as July and Davis Polk following before the end of the year.

As reported in the upcoming July issue of The American Lawyer, the new arrivals bring to seven the number of large New York firms with Silicon Valley offices. All but one–Weil, Gotshal & Manges–have opened since early 1998. Weil’s office, launched in late 1991, is the biggest, with 31 lawyers. Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom has the second-largest, with 23 lawyers.
