A lot has been written about law firms that claim to offer flexible schedules as another perk to retain associates. But a recent survey from the National Association for Law Placement shows that while 94 percent of the firms listed in the National Directory of Legal Employers offer flexible scheduling, only 2.9 percent of attorneys actually take advantage of the offer. That is down slightly from 3 percent in 1998 despite the fact that the number of firms offering part-time scheduling actually rose from 92 percent to 94 percent. San Francisco had one of the highest rates of flex-time lawyers — 4.7 percent. Palo Alto had the highest percentage of flex-time partners — 3.8 percent. In Menlo Park, where firms offer the most flexibility for entry-level attorneys, but offer nearly presidential salaries — only 1.4 percent of the attorneys would rather spend their time working on the great American novel.
