WASHINGTON � Lucy Reed, a partner and specialist in international commercial arbitration at the New York office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, is the new president of the American Society for International Law. Reed will serve a two-year term and she replaces Jos� Alvarez, professor of International Law and Diplomacy at Columbia Law School. The society’s presidential terms alternate between private practitioners and academicians. As an arbitrator, Reed has served on the Eritrea-Ethiopia Claims Commission and as co-director of the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland (the Holocaust tribunal).�� Reed was also the first general counsel of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization and, while with the U.S. Department of State, she was the U.S. agent to the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal and deputy assistant legal adviser for international claims and investment disputes.
