In February, the Capital Area Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators hosted a panel discussion with four leaders who are helping law firms make their offices more environmentally friendly. The panel, which I had the pleasure of moderating, included: Sally Wilson of CB Richard Ellis; Kim Pexton of HITT Contracting Inc.; Jonathan Martel of Arnold & Porter; and Carolyn Kaplan of Nixon Peabody. The upshot: While it’s not easy to build a green office, there are steps that can be taken to quickly achieve a more carbon-neutral workspace. Among the simpler solutions the panelists suggested: Issuing ceramic mugs to employees to replace paper cups at the coffee maker; paying attention to whether the cleaning crew is actually sorting white paper and recyclables from the trash; and turning off lights and copiers at the close of business. Sometimes, however, seemingly simple solutions can cause an uproar. Just try, for instance, to get all of the lawyers at a firm to embrace double-sided copying. That’s where education and a dash of office politics come in. Administrators, the front-line soldiers for sustainability at firms, need to be able to make the sale for green initiatives based on tangible factors, such as costs or client demand. (For more information from the panel discussion, including presentation materials from each of the participants, go to alacapchap.org.) In this issue of Legal Times , we continue the discussion by providing additional practical examples from firms that have launched green initiatives. We also explore the business of climate change law which in the coming years is likely to keep firms deeply involved (and aware) of green issues. David Brown, editor in chief
