The editors of Legal Times are making their own nomination — for the toughest category of Leading Lawyers to crack. The nominee — and winner — is that group of attorneys who direct high-stakes internal investigations for companies facing probing questions about corporate governance from the Securities and Exchange Commission. It turns out that the phrases “welcome publicity” and “SEC inquiry” don’t go together. (Surprise!) Fortunately for us, the elite members of Washington’s internal investigations bar are very good at what they do — meaning that our top picks all had some SEC-announced successful outcomes to point to. As always, Legal Times began this Leading Lawyers project by seeking nominations from the legal community. Then we sent out reporters to ask a lot more questions. The seven profiles here were written by freelancers Anna Palmer and Peter Geier. Anna is an alumna of Legal Times , and Peter paid some dues with our sibling ALM publication, The National Law Journal . We plan three more reports this year: copyright and trademark lawyers (nominations are closed), government affairs specialists (nominations are due May 27), and real estate attorneys (nominations are due July 8).
