Elected and Appointed Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter has appointed Michael A. Schwartz,a partner with Pepper Hamilton,as chairman of a newly formed assessment team that is evaluating the status of Philadelphia Safe and Sound, a city-funded nonprofit organization responsible for contracting out protective services for children that has come under public scrutiny in recent weeks, including being the subject of hearings conducted by City Council. The assessment team will be reviewing, among other things, Safe and Sound’s operations and finances and a program evaluation currently being conducted by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, and then will be making recommendations to the mayor. Before joining Pepper Hamilton on Feb. 25, Schwartz headed the corruption, civil rights, labor and tax fraud unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. � Speakers Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads partner Paul Lancaster Adams participated in a panel discussion titled “Challenges Facing Minority Attorneys Today” during the University of Pennsylvania Black Law Student Association’s Black History Month presentation Feb. 19. Adams is a member of the firm’s labor and employment department and commercial litigation practice areas. � Bradley A. Krouse, chairman of the real estate and finance department at Klehr Harrison Harvey Branzburg & Ellers, was a featured speaker at the National Apartment Association‘s first student housing conference, which had more than 700 attendees in Dallas. His topics included the legal issues of the industry, leases and cohabitation agreements. Krouse concentrates his practice in real estate activities, including acquisition, sale, leasing, financing and development for clients including shopping centers, apartments and office building developers and owners. � Announcement Two Philadelphia-based attorneys in the firmwide wealth planning practice of Reed Smith, are airing their tax tips on WHYY-FM. The attorneys � Carole Sheffieldand Dahesh Patel� bring years of business and tax experience to their practices, which focus on estate planning, general taxation and estate administration. Each of the 50-second messages by Sheffield and Patel will run three times every Tuesday and Thursday until April 15, at 6:50 a.m. and 8:50 a.m., with an additional play later each day. �
