BOSTON A retired Massachusetts Superior Court judge who was instrumental in launching the state’s business litigation sessions has joined the Boston office of alternative dispute resolution company JAMS. Justice Allan van Gestel, 72, will mediate and arbitrate complex business commercial disputes for the Irvine, Calif.-based JAMS. Van Gestel was the founding and presiding justice of the Business Litigation Sessions since its launch as one session in 2000. He officially retired in December 2005, but stayed on the bench for an extra two-year term. “I look forward to building on those experiences, and using the mediation and arbitration processes to work with attorneys and their clients to resolve complex business disputes,” Van Gestel said. Van Gestel was appointed to the Massachusetts Superior Court in 1996 and was formerly a litigation partner at Boston’s Goodwin Procter. The state’s business sessions was initially available only for business cases filed in Suffolk County Superior Court, but it now accepts cases from Essex, Middlesex and Norfolk counties.
