Following a growing trend among U.S. law firms, Greenberg Traurig recently opened an office in China. The Shanghai office is headed up by Peter A. Neumann, a lawyer who has practiced in China since 1993, and currently has two lawyers. The firm is expected to hire several more lawyers within the next few months. Neumann has represented a wide range of publicly held and privately held clients based in the United States, Europe, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia. A number of large law firms have opened offices in China in recent months, including Foley & Lardner. Shanghai has recently emerged as a key staging ground for China’s growing outbound investments. “The new Shanghai office was driven by the firm’s need to assist our diverse client base entering, or already operating, throughout Asia,” said Greenberg president Richard A. Rosenbaum in a statement. “We believe it is important to have top-quality and culturally consistent representation on the ground in this rapidly developing continent appropriate for the business need while exercising discipline in what appears to be an overheated business and legal market in the short term.” Additionally, Greenberg Traurig announced it will relocate shareholder Allison Rosenberg to Tokyo office, where Greenberg recently announced an agreement with the Japanese firm Hayabusa Asuka to form a registered joint venture association with Greenberg. Rosenberg is currently based in New York where she specializes in real estate. Greenberg Traurig is an international law firm with more than 1,750 attorneys and governmental affairs professionals in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
