Oracle agreed to buy rival software company BEA Systems Inc. in a deal worth $8.5 billion. The Jan. 16 agreement came after Oracle made a $6.7 billion hostile bid for BEA in October, then walked away after BEA's board said it wanted more money. It was the first big deal completed under Oracle's new general counsel, Dorian Daley, who was promoted when Daniel Cooperman left for Apple in September. It's also the first time that Oracle has used Latham & Watkins for corporate work, a firm spokeswoman said.
