If you think having a hand in vaulting the firm’s profits to the top of the Am Law 200 might get you noticed by the partnership, you’d be right. It’s certainly part of the reason Kevin Anderson was one of six Wiley Rein lawyers promoted to the first stage of partner — nonequity status. Anderson joined the firm in 2001 and, on his first day, started working on the patent lawsuit brought by firm client NTP Inc. against Research in Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry. During the trial, Anderson noticed that the equipment used for RIM’s demonstration was mid-1990s technology and not from 1987, as RIM claimed. That catch helped the jury reach a verdict in roughly four hours. The result was Wiley Rein scoring a $612.5 million payday for its client — and $4.4 million that year in profits per partner. “I started working on that case my first day,” says Anderson. “I’m not sure I’ll ever work on something that big again.”
