New Delhi has become a busy place for lobbyists. Apco Worldwide announced last week that it is opening two shops in India, and Burson-Marsteller Executive Vice President Howard Paster trumpeted its matchmaking between Indian subsidiary Genesis Public Affairs and its two D.C. lobbying shops, BKSH & Associates and Quinn Gillespie & Associates. The strategic alliance is modeled after the same approach that introduced BKSH and Quinn Gillespie to Burson-Marsteller’s European operations a few years back. While the staff on the ground will be that of Genesis, the D.C. firms will be at the service of their Indian clients, says Scott Pastrick, CEO of BKSH. “We see them better wanting to understand the government blueprint, and we can help them roll out their companies here,” he says. A big part of the deal is, of course, raising the profile of the firms in their respective foreign markets. BKSH has represented an Indian steel company in the past, and Pastrick suggests that the name recognition gained from an alliance with one of India’s largest PR companies can’t hurt. “Obviously, when you brand something you grow the business and you garner respect, so we’re hoping it’s going to be business both ways,” he says. “You’re seeing a real move from India to the United States.”
