CHICAGO — Foley & Lardner received a license from the People’s Republic of China to open an office in Shanghai, allowing the firm to move forward with previously announced plans to have an intellectual property-focused presence in the Asian country. The office will be led by Catherine Sun, who became chair of the firm’s Asia practice when she joined Foley & Lardner earlier this year from the Shanghai office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges, where she managed the firm’s intellectual property practice in China, the firm said in a release. Sun recently led the firm’s first legal work for the Chinese government, which entailed providing counsel to the organizing committee of the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Shanghai in October and guiding intellectual property considerations for the opening ceremony. The office will be Foley & Lardner’s second in Asia, following the opening of an office in Tokyo in 2003.
