Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is not exactly basking in the spotlight these days. But he’s on the national speakers’ circuit, drawing crowds, pulling big fees, and prompting protests wherever he goes. Gonzales also has some mounting legal bills to pay, as a new legal defense fund set up by friends on his behalf attests. Gonzales, who has hired George Terwilliger III of White & Case, is under scrutiny by the Justice Department’s internal investigators for allegations that he gave misleading congressional testimony and possibly meddled with a congressional witness. Two months after resigning amid accusations that he allowed politics to influence the department, Gonzales has resurfaced as a featured speaker with the New York-based Greater Talent Network, which also represents ex-Attorney General Janet Reno, among many other celebrities and public figures. On Nov. 19, for $40,000, he’s expected to deliver a speech to University of Florida students. Other colleges also have reported interest in bringing him in as a speaker. Suggested speech topics, according to Greater Talent’s Web site, for those interested in booking Gonzales: “Pursuing Your American Dream,” “Hispanics in America,” and “Living Legal History: Working with the White House, the Department of Justice and the Supreme Court.” Gonzales’ bio sheet makes it clear that he can capitalize on his rags-to-riches family story. It also mentions his “vital role” as White House counsel on the war on terrorism and his pioneering “new strategies for prosecuting terrorism suspects.” Greater Talent did not respond to requests for comment.
