Nixon Peabody, the firm that declared itself “legally green” in an ad in The Wall Street Journal last week, is taking its office environmental policy an extra step further. The firm announced last week that it has created a “chief sustainability officer” position, which will be held by Carolyn Kaplan, the co-chairwoman of the firm’s renewable energy practice. Kaplan, who is counsel in the firm’s Boston office, will be working to reduce the firm’s carbon footprint and will advise firm attorneys and clients on sustainability initiatives. As to the carbon footprint, the firm is building eco-friendly office spaces, and using nontoxic paint and recycled materials. Kaplan has already begun discussions with other employees about ways the firm can green it up a notch by changing recycling practices, as well as travel and transportation modes. On the sustainability front, Kaplan plans to assist attorneys in advising clients on better environmental business practices and on climate change regulations. “The goal is really to look at this holistically and to really raise the bar for ourselves,” says Kaplan.
