THE AMERICAN LAWYER 2007LIFETIME ACHIEVERS The September issue of The American Lawyer recognized recipients of the magazine’s fourth annual Lifetime Achievers awards to honor distinctive careers and public service. Among the honorees were the following three D.C. attorneys: James Baker III is a senior partner at Baker Botts. He has offices in both Washington and Houston. He has served in senior positions under three U.S. presidents, and he managed the legal campaign that helped George W. Bush win the presidency. Thomas Gottschalk is of counsel at Kirkland & Ellis. He was general counsel of General Motors Corp. until 2006. At GM, he helped establish an in-house pro bono clinic and set new diversity standards for hiring outside counsel. E. Barrett Prettyman Jr. is of counsel at Hogan & Hartson. He helped negotiate the release of Cuban exiles in 1962 after the Bay of Pigs invasion, and he worked at the Department of Justice and in the White House during the Kennedy administration.
EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS The D.C.-based nonprofit organization Equal Justice Works named its 2007 public interest law leaders. Reena Arora and Gavan Meehan received the LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Exemplary Public Service Award. Arora is a third-year law student at New York University School of Law, and Meehan is a recent graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Law. Karen Rothenberg received the John R. Kramer Law School Dean Award. She is the Dean and Marjorie Cook professor of law at the University of Maryland School of Law. Ilene Seidman received the Outstanding Law School Faculty Award. She is a clinical professor of law at Suffolk University Law School. Microsoft senior vice president and general counsel Brad Smith received the Scales of Justice Award. The accolade recognizes his commitment to pro bono work and Microsoft’s advocacy for immigration reform.
WASHINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL Rachel Kronowitz was named one of the D.C. area’s most influential businesswomen by Washington Business Journal as part of its 2007 “Women Who Mean Business” list. Kronowitz is co-chairwoman and a founding partner at Gilbert Randolph.
WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREA CORPORATE COUNSEL ASSOCIATION The Washington Metropolitan Area Corporate Counsel Association has announced the winners of the third annual Corporate Counsel Awards. The association is the largest regional bar association for in-house counsel. American Capital Strategies received the award for outstanding law department. Deborah Fox of Qinetiq North America Operations was named outstanding chief legal officer. Andrew Shipley of Northrop Grumman Corp. was named outstanding in-house counsel. Kristin Walinski of Circuit City Stores Inc. received the community service award. — Marisa McQuilken
