CHICAGO — Mayer Brown has hired three attorneys from rival firms and one from the U.S. Solicitor General’s Office, expanding its intellectual property and litigation practices. “They are all individuals that are very important parts of our strategic plan,” said Kenneth S. Geller, a vice chairman at the firm. Mayer Brown hired C. Donald Klawiter, 57, as a partner and Jennifer M. Driscoll, 37, as counsel from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius to join its antitrust practice in Washington. Klawiter, a former prosecutor in the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division, has defended executives and corporations from six different continents in grand jury investigations and prosecutions, the firm said. He’s also currently the chair of the American Bar Association’s International Cartel Task Force. The firm also hired Dan Himmelfarb, who has worked as an assistant to the solicitor general since 2002 and was previously an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1997 to 2002. Himmelfarb, 42, will join Mayer Brown’s Supreme Court and appellate practice as a partner in Washington. Mayer Brown has also hired Robert D. Gilbert, 52, to join its intellectual property practice in New York. Gilbert has tried more than 20 cases to jury verdicts and won injunctions in seven states, the firm said. Mayer Brown has lifted its total attorney headcount to 1,437, up from 1,363 a year ago and is in discussions for making additional lateral hires before the year ends, Geller said. “We’re very cautious in our lateral recruiting,” Geller said, explaining that the firm is seeking only attorneys it expects will stay for the duration of their careers.
